First Looks

One of the most significant milestones in anyone’s life is their wedding day. As a Chicago wedding photographer, I have seen firsthand how incredible these photos are and mean to couples. It is that moment you get to experience what it truly means to have solidifying commitment and pure, lasting love. However, there is nothing quite like seeing your soon to be spouse for the first time before the ceremony takes place. It is the most memorable moment, and with that, it should be captured to look back upon forever. Even as amazing that they can be, keep in mind that first looks are more than just for the bride and groom.

Do Not Forget About Mom and Dad

I can almost guarantee that there will be some tears shed in these first-look photos. After all, that is their baby up there all grown up and about to get married. Capturing the precise moment when a mother sets eyes on her son about to become a husband or a father seeing his little girl getting ready to embark on her new life is something that cannot even be put into words. It is an emotional moment that is worth savoring for years to come.

Additional Considerations

I highly recommend asking your photographer to do a first look shoot. You really have nothing to lose and everything to gain from it.  However, do not jump into it blindly.  Discuss with your photographer how you want this entire scene to play out. A couple of things to consider include:

  • Audience or no Audience – If you want a crowd witnessing your first look at your soon to be spouse, then that can certainly happen. But if you want it to be an intimate moment, then having it be just the two of you might be the better way to go. The same thing applies to your family and friend’s first looks as well.
  • Indoors or Outdoors? – Discuss the logistics of the shoot beforehand, so everyone is on the same page of where to go and at what time.  This will ensure everything goes according to plan and you get exactly what you want.

First look photos are certainly optional, but you should never skip out on having your photographer around to capture that magical and emotional moment. First looks are something you will want to have documented because it will be raw and real. Even though this moment may only last for a few seconds, with a photographer there, you will be able to have that perfectly authentic reaction that illuminates your emotional connection through pictures that you can cherish forever.
