Ideal sunsets in Chicago

Engagement Chicago Sunset Skyline

Chicago sunset photography is something that is undeniably beautiful. These shots not only create wonderful colors, but they can also cast that gorgeous golden light that will make your images stand out. However, getting the perfect shots in a city with huge skyscrapers like Chicago will undoubtedly be challenging, at least in the center of the city. If you really have your heart set on a sunset shoot here, then there are some things to take into consideration to achieve this goal.

Scope out Some Spots Beforehand

Before you embark on a photo shoot, take some time to venture around the city to see what areas would work best to get the full sunset effect. It may be a good idea to do this while sunset is occurring so you can get a good feel of what each location can offer you. Remember, the less buildings, the better the results. With that in mind, I suggest that you go further to the west side of the city where the environment is suburban and has much more sky exposure. Some amazing spots you can look into as well are Independence Grove and Cantigny Park if you want to a more nature-oriented theme.

Alternatively, if you feel like staying in the city and want that city sunset vibe, there are some other routes you can take. For instance, you can always shoot from the planetarium, or even rent a building venue that has an excellent top view. By doing this, you can get the sun kissing the skyline with minimal building obstruction in your images.

Time It Accordingly

When it comes to timing your shoot, there are two things to consider. The first one is that sunsets do not last very long, usually about a half-hour or so of peak time.  In order to make the most out of this super short window, make sure you get onsite and are ready about 15-30 minutes beforehand so you do not waste any precious time.

The second key thing to note is to be aware of the season your photoshoot will occur in.  Seasons play a critical role when it comes to timing the sunset correctly. Each one has its own unique times, with winter being sooner and summer being much later. As long as you plan this out and give yourself enough time to get the shots you want, then you will be fine. You can also ask your photographer for more insight to really nail down the timing.

Conclusion

It would be extremely hard to find someone who does not admire the beauty of sunsets. Simply watching one will give you a heightened sense of gratitude and allow you to absorb the natural beauty of the world. Being able to capture one of these moments in time is not only exciting, it will give you amazing images that will last a lifetime. Even though Chicago can be hard to get a perfectly exposed sunset sky, you can certainly find a location that can come pretty close. Do your due diligence ahead of time, never hesitate to ask your photographer for advice and make sure to have fun along the way.
